FAQ

100 crossovers? Are you insane?
Possibly.

Hey, this is kind of like [info]fanfic100.
Yep. This comm was started as a response to that one, owing to the fact that [info]juleskicks is an enormous crossover whore, but that one doesn't allow more than ten of the hundred fics to be crossovers. We are not affiliated with [info]fanfic100. It's nothing against [info]fanfic100 or its founder, it's just intended to be a home for people who felt they'd been left out in the cold by the 'no more than 10 crossovers' policy.

Is there a minimum/maximum word count?
Minimum is a drabble (100 words). No maximum.

Is there a time limit?
Nope! Take as long as you want.

Can I use fic I've already written to fill the challenges?
Yeah, but the general idea is to write more fic, so no more than twenty of the stories may be previously-written fic which just happens to meet the requirements.

What/who can I claim?
You can claim physical places (Sunnydale, Neptune High School, Hogwarts, etc.) and talk about characters from different fandoms being there. You can claim a general fandom -- say BtVS -- and proceed to cross all the different characters over with various other fandoms, or you could claim one character from that fandom -- say Willow Rosenberg -- and just cross her over. Heck, you can claim a single crossovery pairing -- say Buffy Summers/Malcolm Reynolds -- and just proceed to become the single most prolific writer of Buffy/Mal out there.

If I claim a pairing/character, does everything have to focus on that pairing/character?
Well, no, but that's kind of the general idea behind claiming them, so the character, or both the characters in the pairing, should at least appear, even if they're not the focus of the story.

If someone has claimed Series A already, can I still claim Character X from Series A?
Absolutely.

If I grab Character X from Fandom Y, and someone else grabs Character A from Fandom B, would I be allowed to write Character X/Character A?
Absolutely. If I claimed Buffy, and someone else claimed Methos, each of us would still be free to write Buffy/Methos as we envisioned the pairing going.

What about characters who inhabit the same universe, but different series (i.e. Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel)?
As long as they've never met, the pairing is acceptable. For example -- Buffy and Gunn is acceptable, as they never met in canon, but Buffy and Wesley is not (Buffy/Wesley/Gunn, however, the judges will accept -- so long as at least two of the three characters have never met, it'll be fine).

Of course, if you want to write Buffy/Wesley set in an AU where the Scoobies go to Harbor High and Summer and Cordelia are best friends, that's fine. But there has to be a crossover element in there -- simply calling Buffy/Wesley a crossover pairing won't work.

What about Actor A from Movie X/Actor B from Movie Y? Is that a crossover?
No. Actors from different movies and musicians from different bands would all be lumped under the RPF (Real Person Fiction) heading, so they're not technically crossovers because they're all the same fandom -- RPF (or real life). Regency AU!Sarah Michelle Gellar/Jack Aubrey: crossover. Regency AU!Buffy/Jack Aubrey: crossover. Russell Crowe/Sarah Michelle Gellar: not a crossover.

Do I have to write Fandom X being crossed over with one hundred different fandoms?
Oh, hell no. You can write twenty Fandom X/Fandom Y crossovers, twenty Fandom X/Fandom Z crossovers, twenty Fandom X/Fandom A crossovers, twenty Fandom X/Fandom B crossovers, ten Fandom X/Fandom C crossovers, and ten Fandom X/Fandom A/Fandom Z crossovers. You can, if you want, write one hundred Fandom X/Fandom Y crossovers. Whatever is easiest, most interesting, and most fun for you.

What about AUs?
Well, AUs are allowed over at [info]fanfic100, so you really don't need to be here if that's all you want to do. :D AUs are allowed, but there must be a crossover element -- whether it's Seth, Ryan, Summer, and Marissa at Hogwarts instead of Harbor, or Buffy Summers, urchin on the streets of Boston 1720, meets the notorious pirate Malcolm Reynolds.

Historical AUs featuring real people... okay, will be considered RPF crossovers and thus will be allowed. So Faith, Elizabethan Slayer, meets Christopher Marlowe, gay athiest spy, is allowed, but just Faith the Elizabethan Slayer is not. Is that fair?

When my fic is written, how should I share it?
Post it here -- although if it's longer than 100 words, we ask that you put it behind a cut tag -- post it to your journal and link to it here, post all the stories in your journal and when they're all done, post a list of links here... really, we're not picky.

I have a question that's not answered here.

do stories posted outside Livejournal count? The max length of a livejoyrnal's post is only around 8,000 words. It is excruciatingly painful to post stories stretching over many posts and get the cross references right, as you don't know the name of the file in advance, thus have to repost the files multiple times etc. So may links to downloadable zipped html files or pdf files be acceptable?
PinkSakuraPetalspooka_07 on October 31st, 2009 06:05 pm (UTC)
Definitely! So long as you post a link in the community so I can make a tag for it (if there isn't one for it yet) and so other people can enjoy your work!

crossovers50
As it took such a long time for the comm to get revived, I've already started writing with the saim claims for the similar crossover50 challenge which features a subset of the claims here. Is it acceptable to carry the already written stories over to here?
PinkSakuraPetalspooka_07 on October 31st, 2009 06:08 pm (UTC)
Re: crossovers50
Since there's been so much back up, I'm going to allow it in this case.

Just a quick question... is it okay if some of my stories also have appearances by other fandoms?

Like, my claim is Dean/Faith (SPN/BTVS). Say I have them in San Fransisco and in need of getting a little magic done. Could I have them visit the Halliwell witches (Charmed) to get the spell done?

I ask because I plan on several/most of the stories I write for this to be all taking place in the same little AU Universe, and I'd like to be able to make it kinda epic... but if it's not allowed, I'll just have the stories with characters from other fandoms be non-Crossovers100 fics... thanks
PinkSakuraPetalspooka_07 on November 30th, 2009 09:08 pm (UTC)
Absolutely. So long as Dean and Faith are both in the stories, you can crossover whatever you like. The more the better!

REAL quick question -- I'm having a 'ditzy night' and not really understanding something here.

I've chosen 3 AUs that all have converged in my imagination. The Monkees (as superheroes), the Who (as elementals) and Atlantis (With Rodney having powers). If I wrote those 3 crossing over would that count? Or should I pick other crossovers?

Sorry for the confusion.
PinkSakuraPetalspooka_07 on December 18th, 2009 06:18 am (UTC)
Whatever your claim is can be crossed over with (almost) any other fandom. The problem comes with crossing The Monkees with the Who. Technically they're RL fandoms that could have conceivably met. (Unlike, say, Elvis and Britney Spears or something).

However, since The Monkees were also created for a TV show (found ala wikipedia, forgive me if I'm wrong), they can be considered a television fandom and therefore there's no problem crossing it with the Who.

Now, as far as which claim the stories are going to fulfill? Since you have 3 claims, you'll need to write 300 crossovers, but we allow for 20 previous stories to be used to fill the table, and I'll let you do it as well. So, you can write 60 fic that count for each table, and then you still have to write 240 separate fic. (So, 20 that count for all three and 80 table-exclusive fic each) I hope that makes sense?

I'm interested in claiming the Tenth Doctor from Doctor Who, but someone already has.

Since we would obviously be doing different crossovers for the character and writing different stories, are two people allowed to claim the same character?
PinkSakuraPetalspooka_07 on December 29th, 2009 03:27 am (UTC)
We allow up to three people (more in special circumstances) to a claim. So, you may definitely claim the Doctor Who: the Tenth Doctor if you want. Please put your claim on the claims post, so it's easier to keep track of claims.

AU or Crossover?
Hi there

I was wanting to mesh the worlds of Star Trek XI and Firefly together, so that the main seven from ST would be the crew on Serenity. For example: Kirk as captain instead of Mal, McCoy as ship's doctor instead of Simon, ect. They would work on Serenity and live in the universe of Firefly, but would retain the majority of what makes them their particular character (McCoy would still be a grumpy Southerner with a daughter named Joanna, etc).

My question is this: Would this be considered an AU or a crossover? I don't want to join the au or crossover comm and then find out I joined the wrong one. :)

Thanks!

Re: AU or Crossover?
Hmmm, my first reaction after reading the scenario was to say crossover, but then I read it again and I can see where you're confused on which one it is. Personally, I'd classify it as an AU!Crossover. (and technically all crossovers are AU if you think about it) Which means it's a crossover. :D This would be accepted at this comm.
kaitou_pandorakaitou_pandora on March 1st, 2010 04:31 pm (UTC)
Hi!

Just a quick clarification question, since I'm getting myself confused in considering it:

I'm considering claiming Hakuba Saguru. The problem lies in his canon - his first appearance is in the manga series Magic Kaito, but he also appears in the more widely known Detective Conan (marketed as Case Closed in the US) anime/manga series. All of the evidence I've found hints that Detective Conan and Magic Kaito could mesh together to become one series, but they would still stand alone as separate universes.

So, if I claimed him, would I have to claim him from both canons to claim the overall background for him? And would writing assuming both series be considered a crossover, or would they just mesh as two separate series with a common background and therefore not be a crossover? (If it helps any, a lot of Magic Kaito characters end up showing one way or another in Detective Conan, whether in the anime/manga itself and/or in one of the technically-not-canon movies). As far as I can tell, the link between the series is rather similar to the Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicles/xxxHolic series link.
PinkSakuraPetalspooka_07 on March 1st, 2010 07:02 pm (UTC)
Hmmm, that is a good question. What do you plan on crossing over as far as fandoms go? Are you going to be writing about Hakuba Saguru in one fandom crossing over into the other (ex: DC into MK), or are you picking another fandom all together (like, say, Inuyasha or something)

It's been a while since I've seen Detective Conan (and I've never heard of Magic Kaito), but if the link between them is similar to T:RC/xxxHolic's link, then maybe I'll just have the fandom read as: Detective Conan/Magic Kaito (or something along those lines). Then you don't have to worry about what fandom to claim him under! :D

I hope that all made sense. I just got off work and I'm still trying to unwind.

The Loch Ness Mobster ;-): doctor003curuchamion on March 1st, 2010 05:06 pm (UTC)
Okay, this is theoretical as I'm not quite sure I want to commit to this yet... but I'm wondering how a couple of Doctor-Who-specific situations would be treated by the rules of this comm.

First, whether it would be possible to claim a single Doctor's era as a "general series"-type claim; this would give me more flexibility than claiming a single character, while not blocking up other people's access to eras I wouldn't be primarily writing about.

Second, whether crossing the eras of two different Doctors (as long as the characters have never met in canon) - for instance, the ubiquitous Ten-and-Three cakefics, or a Jamie-meets-Sarah-Jane piece - would be considered a legitimate crossover. (I'm guessing yes, from the Buffy/Angel FAQ above, but I'd like to make sure.)
PinkSakuraPetalspooka_07 on March 1st, 2010 07:09 pm (UTC)
Okay, so the first is a definite can-do. I'd just write it as Doctor Who (1st Era): General Series (or what ever era you were looking at.)

The second is okay, too. If you're claiming the Eras and not the characters, then it won't matter if they've met in canon before, since they're not part of the claim. If, however, you're claiming The Doctor from the 1st Era, and some guy/girl he's met in the 3rd Era (in canon), then it doesn't count as a crossover.

I hope that all made sense?

Completely forgot to ask this when I was claiming.

Say you have an idea for a longer fic (like a 20k oneshot or a multi-chapter) that would use multiple prompts. Would you have to separate it into "parts" for each prompt or could you post it in its entirety and just list the prompts used at the top?
PinkSakuraPetalspooka_07 on June 4th, 2010 02:57 am (UTC)
Well, the whole point of the 100 prompts is to write 1 fic/chapter per prompt. If you're writing a multi-part fic, each chapter can be used to fill a prompt, but if it's a 20k one-shot it's considered 1 fic and should only use one prompt.

If that one-shot can be separated into "parts" that make sense (i.e.- 1 part for each day that occurs, or pre-crisis, mid-crisis, post-crisis, etc.) and each of those parts fill a prompt, then that would work.

As far as posting goes, you may post a link to just the first "part" and list all of the prompts used as long as the other parts are linked consecutively. (So a link to "part" 2 would be at the top/bottom of "part" 1 and so on) For multi-chaptered fics, you may either post links as you finish the chapters, or you can wait until you're done, then post a link as described above, with all of the prompts used listed.

I hope that makes sense.

Two questions:

1. Can you claim friendships? I mean this in a similar way as pairings, where both characters are from different fandoms.

2. Can you claim more than two fandoms in a single claim, such as a threesome between characters who are all from different fandoms?

I'm asking because I'm considering claiming a three-person friendship and need to know if I'm actually allowed to do that.
PinkSakuraPetalspooka_07 on June 11th, 2010 03:19 am (UTC)
Absolutely! The category "pairing" is poorly titled, since claims of single characters from multiple fandoms don't necessarily need to be romantic. I'll have to consider a new title for that category, or make up a new one entirely. Hmmmm....

And you most definitely may claim more than two fandoms, though I think three should be the limit, unless a persone has a concrete idea for more than that.

Hope that helps.

PinkSakuraPetalspooka_07 on October 2nd, 2011 12:36 am (UTC)
Yep, it's totally ok to have a couple of already written fics for a claim.
Meredith: idgigladdecease on October 27th, 2011 06:47 pm (UTC)
I'm confusing myself just thinking about this, so I don't know if my question will make any sense. That said, my question is about fusions.

My claim is for Supernatural (general series), and I'm pretty sure that fusions placing Supernatural characters in another universe count as crossovers for the purpose of this community. But what about taking characters from another universe and putting them in the Supernatural universe - would that still work? No characters from Supernatural would be present, just the general mythos of the series.
PinkSakuraPetalspooka_07 on October 28th, 2011 12:56 am (UTC)
Yep, that'll work! If your claim was something like: Dean Winchester (SPN), then he'd have to be present, but since your claim is the general series, none of the characters from SPN actually have to be present. :D
